WHY I CHARGE OUT-OF-POCKET FEES

The Medicare system is highly complex and the billing for your consult is not simple. Medicare is funded by the Australian Government, to provide all Australians with access to subsidised healthcare via rebates. The Medicare rebate you are eligible for is determined by the time we spend together and the things we talk about or achieve together – for example, procedures, care plans, mental health, women’s health, and general health are all billed to Medicare differently. Each consult is also billed differently depending on whether you have a concession card or are a child under 16.Unfortunately, the current Medicare rebate system incentivises shorter and simpler consults, by making these more highly rebated. Mental health, women’s health and longer consults covering complex or multiple issues, are funded at significantly lower amounts under Medicare. Those of you who know me, know the backbone of my practice is spending the time with you that you need. I want to continue to offer quality care over rushed ‘6-minute medicine’, but I can’t do that if I can’t bill that longer time appropriately and fairly to the care given. The fees I charge also directly contribute to covering the overall costs of running the clinic, which are also increasing. This includes the salaries of our amazing reception and management team and our skilled and invaluable nurses, as well as the costs of keeping the doors open on a fully stocked and functioning clinic.I am very mindful of the cost-of-living challenges facing so many in our community and I do not implement out-of-pocket gap fees lightly. Thank you for your understanding, and for the great work we do together towards your health.I encourage you to speak to me directly if costs are a significant barrier to you attending for care.
